The spark plugs are currently in the cylinder for a very long time, sometimes 100,000 miles, giving the galvanic action ample time to do its job. The zinc in the lubricant acts as a sacrificial anode, protecting the aluminum filaments in the head from corrosion. Cheap insurance and a container should last a very long time.
