I had high hopes for this motion sensor as it got rave reviews from many people. workshop experience. For now, let me stick to the good things. I was able to connect the sensor to my home kit's network in less than 10 seconds by scanning the QR code on the side of the box with the iPhone Home.app. Brilliant. From then on everything seemed to work as intended. Brilliant. The sensor could travel 35 feet into the garage from my house through the back door. As far as I could tell, the connection remained stable during transport. Brilliant. I installed the sensor on the garage door because I felt that would be a good test area to cover up. When testing the motion detection, I found that I could be about 25 feet from the sensor and it would read the motion and send the results to the sensor instantly. home use. Accuracy and motion detection appear to be on par with business-class sensors. There was virtually no lag when transferring to my iPhone. For fun, I decided to open the garage door while standing still to see if the motion sensor would go off, but it didn't, leading me to believe it uses passive infrared (confirmed). I have not tested the response time outside of my network or on a wireless cellular connection. I've found that the sensor disconnects when I set up scenes or automations. I've ruled out everything possible when troubleshooting. After removing/inserting the battery it got back up and running fairly quickly. In the second round of testing, I was able to set up an automation that, when a sensor detected movement in the garage, would turn on a lamp in my home office. Then the automation reset after three minutes. I was able to successfully test the automation within 15 minutes with different test scenarios without any problems or delays. This is exactly what I was looking for in this device. But here's the problem. My shop 32x32 is partially insulated. Approximately 25-30 feet from home, Apple TV (hub) and where the sensor is located. I'm guessing it's connected via Bluetooth to the AppleTV in the bedroom, but I'm wondering if the sensor was using my iPhone XR as a repeater for Apple.com. Confusing. I also live in a cold region of North America. The average temperature in the garage this week is about 42°F. I'm saying all this because the next day the sensor somewhere went dead the night before. My guess is that either the sensor doesn't like the low temperatures in the garage, or maybe the Bluetooth range limitation/interference. I could probably extend the Bluetooth range by adding another AppleTV, but that adds to the cost. I bought it specifically for the garage so I'm mostly disappointed. I probably won't return it because I can use it indoors on a window, in a stairwell, in a cookie jar, dog door, etc. What I really need is a WiFi enabled motion sensor. I was a little excited to find it. Since I couldn't test it at home, I can't confirm that. I will come back and update my review as soon as time permits.
