As other reviewers have pointed out, the top center battery connector can easily come loose and touch the other connector, shorting out the battery. * I have not experienced this. *Although as a precaution I taped the top middle battery connector to keep it from dangling. See photo. After this quick fix, it works safely and as expected. With 6x NiMH, the battery life is significantly longer (2-3 times) than the 1100mAh Li-ion battery that comes with the Baofeng UV-5R. Another downside to this product is how loosely the snap mechanism holds the clam shell construction together. I can easily detach them without pressing the release button. And further. Please, please use the supplied dummy battery when using alkaline (1.5V) AA batteries! If 6 alkaline batteries are used, the radio will not work on purpose because the higher total voltage is out of range. Many people have given this product bad reviews for not reading it.
