My hair got so tangled around one of those rollers that when I took the rollers off I pulled out most of the hair. If you have fine or even moderately long hair, do not use these curlers. They are confusing and have no real locking mechanism. My friend had to cut some of these curlers out of my hair. Before I went out of this, yes, I brushed my hair and used conditioner before using any curlers. I trim my ends every 2 weeks, almost never hot style my hair, and don't use any products that contain silicone or sulfates. My hair had no cause for confusion other than the design of the curlers. I'm sure they will work better for someone with a coarser hair follicle type.
