Review on Lenovo USB C HDMI Adapter Cable by Leon Johnsson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

HDR requires a DP 1.4 capable chipset

Allows me to connect a Thinkpad P50 to my Samsung 7 series and get 4K60p 4:4:4. This was important as the laptop only has DP 1.2 and HDMI 1.4, with the former having bandwidth for 4K60p but being actively adaptable (which means expensive and generally poor adapters that may or may not handle color correctly). ; Passive adapters only connect with 1.4 bandwidth and 1.4 bandwidth is only good enough for 4K30. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't use HDR on my device, which wasn't a hard requirement for me. USB-C alternate mode uses DP under the hood, which is spec 1.2 on this laptop. As such, there is no support for HDR, and according to Nvidia's documentation, HDR has never been supported. I can't seem to get 10-bit color on a quadcopter either, which is a bummer.

Pros
  • Plug and play, no driver required
Cons
  • I'll write later
