I actually use this with Medline Industries MDS138020 Accu-Therm Latex-Free Hot/Cold Gel Pack for migraines. I apply the gel pack to one end and keep wrapping it around until it's done. This gives one strip the perfect length to wrap around the head and the ends overlap so I can overlap the ends to hold them together and have a cold wrap on the other side. Its thickness is enough to catch a cold without burns. I keep two of these in separate freezer bags in the freezer to swap out when needed, and the freezer bags keep the smell of frozen food at bay. Maybe there are cheaper fabrics but this size and thickness is perfect for me.
