Review on 📷 Ultimate Surveillance with Ubiquiti Networks UVC-G3-PRO Network Camera by Michael Weaver

3x zoom, metal body, larger than the regular G3

The UVC G3 Pro is an upgraded version of the UVC G3 in the Ubiquiti Unifi Video lineup. I won't go into the details of the setup, but it was immediately found and accepted by my current Unifi NVR, just like their other cameras. (These cameras require Unifi Video which is free to download from Ubiquiti and can work offline or you can connect to a physical server/NVR). for nighttime viewing and recording in 1080p at 30 fps. Ubiquiti claims that the UVC G3 Pro offers about 15% better night vision over the standard UVC G3, even if you have a G3 with an additional LED ring. Haven't been able to test this yet, but I'll edit my review if I find anything else. Please note that the optional LED ring is not compatible with the Pro model. UVC-G3 Pro has several other important improvements. One of the biggest features is that the Pro offers a 3x optical zoom that can be controlled via the Unifi software and the video app. There's no noticeable drop in quality when zooming, which is a nice feature since Ubiquiti doesn't offer a PTZ camera. It also has a metal body compared to the plastic body of the regular G3 and is slightly heavier and also slightly larger. I've also noticed that the rubber grommet they include in the waterproof chamber has been improved and I really like it. To be honest I never had any trouble getting water through the old bushing but they improved it anyway. Now that the cable comes out of the base connector bracket and you're pushing the slack back into the wall to allow the camera to be installed, the grommet remains pressed firmly against the camera body to ensure a good seal. You used to have to remove the camera mount after pushing the cable as far as possible and then try to reattach the grommet to get that seal. The Pro is currently slightly more expensive than the standard G3. So if you want 3x zoom and the claimed benefit of vastly improved night vision, go for the Pro. Otherwise, you'll likely be just as happy with the standard G3. Most importantly, unlike some of their other products, the POE injector isn't included, so you'll need a POE+ switch to power it (standard POE switches won't work). Finally someone asked if you could remove the stock G3. Leave the base mount in place and attach the new G3 Pro to the old base. Unfortunately there aren't any. Not only is the design different and the standard base doesn't work with the G3 Pro, the G3 Pro's base is actually wider; You can use one of the original screw holes that the standard base was installed in, but you will need to rotate the base a little and insert a new hole to install the second screw. It hurts a little, but that's how it is. Overall I like this camera and they are still a good camera for a quality security camera.

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Very expensive
