Review on Kensington Orbit Trackball Scroll K72337US by Elvis Kimbro

My daily driver for 9 years and more

I have been using this mouse model for over 9 years now. I first got one of these in high school as a gift from my dad who uses it himself. It helped me get through my bachelor's, my master's and a few years of work. I love him so much. I've bought a few for home, office use and a spare if they ever discontinue it. So far none have failed. I've attached pictures of me putting my hand on it: thumb on the left button, index finger on the ball, middle finger on the wheel, and ring finger on the right button. My little finger sits sideways and doesn't control the mouse at all. I use it like this, YMMV, depending on the size of your hand and what you find most comfortable. I found my pinky just wasn't strong enough to click much without getting tired after a while. My index finger is the most dexterous finger, so good for precise trackball work. I've tried some of the other hand positions described in other reviews and found them uncomfortable and uncomfortable so it's very personal. Experiment with this to find what works best for you. I don't use the included wrist rest. I think it's more comfortable to put my wrist directly on the table based on the angle of the mouse (probably because I have small hands). YMMV.Pros again (why I love this mouse): - Very comfortable and ergonomic for prolonged use (at least for me). My hand and wrist rest on it in a neutral position. With the trackball you can make quick and precise movements. The traditional mouse relies on full forearm/wrist movement, which is slower and less precise. Left-clicking with the thumb is easier than with a standard mouse because this finger is stronger than the index finger and doesn't tire as easily. - Large scroll wheel is easy to use. I can either scroll a little or release it to scroll a lot, and I don't have to bend my finger as much as a traditional mouse scroll wheel would require. There is another Kensington trackball mouse model with a scroll wheel like this one (the 4 button one) but I don't feel comfortable putting my hand on it. Cons (only minor inconveniences for me): Use it when they come to my computer to show me something. - Larger than a traditional mouse, won't fit in a standard laptop bag. - The area under the ball gets dirty pretty quickly and is difficult to clean as it has a lot of nooks and crannies. I usually just clean the three legs to allow the ball to move more freely, about every two weeks. - No software support for Linux or Chromebook, so you cannot customize the buttons on those operating systems. - No middle click, but this can be emulated by your operating system as pressing the left and right buttons at the same time. - It's probably hard to play with. I don't play so it's not a problem for me.

Pros
  • Removable palm rest gently cushions and keeps hand and wrist in an ergonomic position for pain free use during long computer work
Cons
  • Unsafe
