My first probe hit its maker after accidentally catching fire in my charcoal grill. This error was on my side. So I was very careful with that, trying to insert the probe into the flesh only after the fire had been reduced and there was no flame. Worked great but still fell out after only 4 or 5 uses - and most of it was actually in an electric smoker. In researching these types of probes, I've found that a lot of people are reporting bugs. I think this explains why some sensors of this type are sold in packs of three. Since I have to open the door/lid to pour the meat I use a regular instant read thermometer. No more probes with cables. cheat on me twice
