Late 2011 MacBook Pro i5 core. This increased along with the original 4GB of RAM and an activity monitor that indicated around 3GB was being used in basic web browsing. I dropped caution and upgraded to 16GB of RAM. The same activity shows more than 7GB of RAM in use! While macOS seems to manage the paging file well with a small amount of RAM, it definitely wants more if possible. I doubt RAM makes a MacBook any faster, but it allows for more efficient operation since data isn't constantly being cached to the hard drive when memory is running low.
