Crimping pliers, RJ45 plugs and stripping pliers work great. I give three stars because of the tester. The instructions say to use a standard 9V battery, as does all the people who have answered questions here at Revain. I open the battery compartment and lo and behold it's pretty obvious that this device (it seems) works with 2 AAA batteries (side by side with opposite polarity like any other device that uses 2 AAA batteries). 9V wouldn't fit in space even if it had to go there. I tried two different sets of AAA batteries and got no response from the device. I'm not sure if I got the correct tester with this kit or if they changed the battery type. The device is DOA only. Either way, you don't really need a tester, so it's fine, but if you're buying one in late 2017, be aware. EDIT: Tried a third set of batteries and got the tester working. The instructions that came with the device are either out of date or from another tester. I had no green lights, only red ones. Regardless, the cable I made worked fine, so I'm assuming my version only has red lights to indicate continuity. Change to five stars.
