The ink in my Brother MFC-J985DW was dry so I needed new cartridges and decided to risk them. The cyan cartridges were not recognized by the printer despite several installation attempts including a printer reset. As a result, I removed the chip from the old cartridge and put it on a new one. The printer now considers the cyan cartridge with the new chip to be an original Brother cartridge, but reports the other two as "third-party suppliers". I keep empty Brother cartridges in case I need to replace more chips. Update: After a few days the printer stopped recognizing other cartridges. I printed about a dozen documents, all of which came out in very poor quality. Today I replaced them with original Brother cartridges. It's worth it even though it costs 4 times as much.
