actually measures 36 1/4" long. The fact that it extends 1/8" past the last increment lines at each end makes it easy to take precise measurements or marks; however, if you want to attach the end to something to check length or to make a mark, remember to subtract 1/8" from your measurement. This ruler looks very well made and high quality, but it is very thin and flexible. The thinness makes it easy to make precise marks. I bought it to mark glass for cutting and the cork backing prevents slipping and accidental scratches on us. I also wanted to use it as a guide for my glass cutter but use it so subtly, that care is needed to prevent the cutter from running into the ruler.The thinness makes it ideal for measuring or as a knife guide, but for me a thicker aluminum li would be fine neal a better glass cutting guide (although I haven't yet found a cork backed ruler). Apparently I need two separate instruments, one of which I may need to use for the jury. I give this line 5 stars because it does what it was designed to do and does it well, even if it doesn't meet all of my goals.
