Review on AIMTOM Portable Solar Charger Compatible by Evan Austin

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Beautifully crafted solar panel with frustrating performance

The solar panel is well made, materials are strong, stitching is good, overall I feel it will last for many years of intensive use. I was worried it would be unwieldy because it's so long and has so many segments, but that turned out to be no problem at all. I would give it 5 stars and buy another if it performs better. I tested it today under near-ideal conditions - no cloud in the sky, full southern exposure on a flat mountain at 7000 feet, with a stand to hold the panel at an angle of about 35 degrees. The best output I got was 38 watts in just a few seconds. Mostly it was 34-36 watts. Not bad, but clearly the best he can do. I then moved the panel to my RV (where I will be using it most of the time). Hanging from the side of the RV to the sun, propped up as best I could (maybe 10-15 degrees), the maximum output was 24-26 watts. It was at 1:00 p.m. That's the best I'll see with him on my RV. At 2:00 p.m., the output power dropped to 19 watts. I put the panel on the back of the RV at 2:30pm to keep an eye on the sun but never went above 14 watts again. I'm comparing this to the 60w Tenergy folding panel which is the only other 60w panel I own. Where I first used the Aimtom (and got 36W of power), Tenergy typically delivers 48W from 10am to 2pm. Even with a bit of cloudiness or haze, it averages 38-42 watts at this time of day. At 4:30pm it's still delivering 22-24 watts and I'm not moving or adjusting it. That's a big difference. I've read that for a given total power (60 watts in this case), the fewer segments you make the panel, the more power you get. Tenergy has 4 segments, Aimtom has 9. This probably explains the difference in performance between them. I love the size and shape of the Aimtom and I love how it folds into a small package. It turns out that the energy costs for this are too high for me. I'll take a closer look at the Aimtom 80 watt panel, which like the Tenergy has 4 segments. It's not that small of course, but if I can get 60-64 watts out of it on a regular basis (performance is similar to Tenergy for an 80 watt panel) and get the quality of a 60 watt aimtom, I'd be fine with that. .Panel Tenergy is not stupid. I got it complete with the Tenergy power plant. I have already bought a Tenergy power station and I really liked it and when I wanted to buy another one it came in a kit with a power station and a 60w panel. So I bought the panel for less than $100, which in hindsight was a real bargain because the panel is pretty good. Solid build (although not as high quality as the aimtom), great performance, easy to use. I'm not sure I'd want to pop it into my RV during my travels (although it would probably be nice), but at home I'd reach for it in front of the aimtom every time. Hope that helps!
