Review on Roku Streaming Bluetooth Headphone Shortcuts by Scott Reid

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best Roku yet with some specs

I've ordered my Ultra 2020 directly from Roku since Revain ordered again. It arrived on October 16th, a day after the release date. I'm using it as a replacement for my 2018 Ultra model. I also have a second 4K TV with a Roku Streaming Stick+ as well as a Sharp Roku TV. I recently tried and returned the Fire TV Cube. Therefore, I will make comparisons in addition to the Ultra 2020 test. Ultra 2020 is said to be 30 percent faster than previous versions. If so, then I hardly notice it. Don't upgrade if speed is your only motivation and you already own a 2018 or 2019 Ultra. What really brings it to the party is Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision support. I have a 4K TV and an audio system that supports both, so the upgrade was worth it. I found Dolby Vision (which is offered by many Netflix originals) to be superior to standard HDR. Unless you're picky about getting the best picture quality like I am, using Dolby Vision might not matter to you. The Fire TV Cube supports both Atmos and Dolby Vision, so it's certainly an alternative. I personally prefer Roku's menu system. I found the Fire TV menu to be cluttered with ads, and I always navigated its Prime Video-centric slant. I love Prime Video, but I didn't like always seeing the Prime Video options first. Roku is a neutral display of browsing options. Another issue I had with the Fire TV Cube was the audio syncing to the picture. At least twice a day I had to unplug the Cube to keep the audio in sync. This trick always worked, but was annoying. I originally had an audio sync issue on the Ultra 2020, but I was able to fix it in the settings. Ultra uses "Autodetect" by default. I changed this audio setting to "Auto Passthrough" and the problem was fixed. The biggest improvement in Ultra 2020 is the remote control. It features a volume control rocker with a mute button. There is a voice search. It has four shortcut apps: Hulu, Sling, Disney+, and Netflix. Additionally, it has two programmable buttons that gave me quick access to Prime Video and YouTube. The remote can control both your TV and audio receiver IF both your TV and audio receiver have HDMI-CEC enabled. Most newer devices have HDMI-CEC, but make sure you have it if you expect a Roku remote to control your system. Compared to the Roku Streaming Stick+, which supports 4K and HDR, the Ultra has wired LAN connectivity with longer range than previous Roku devices, in addition to fast WiFi. Wired is always better when you have the option. I also found that while the Ultra gets pretty hot, the Streaming Stick+ gets pretty hot. The Streaming Stick+ displayed an overheating warning twice. That makes me nervous. Finally, Roku devices like the Fire TV Cube can be controlled with Alexa. Just make sure you download the Roku Routine in the Alexa app, then run "Search for Devices" to add the 2020 Ultra. Zest: The Roku Ultra 2020 is a great streaming device. Apps run faster and better than apps on my LG SmartTV. Apps are also updated much more frequently than those installed on the TV. The Ultra 2020 is worth considering if you own or plan to buy a Dolby Vision-enabled 4k TV, as well as a Dolby Atmos sound system. Otherwise, the streaming stick is half the price and almost as fast. The Fire TV options are for you if you primarily watch Prime Video and are comfortable using the Fire TV menu system with all of its displays.

Pros
  • No more remotes: Turn on your TV, adjust the volume and control your streaming device with a Roku voice remote
Cons
  • Almost never
