ever-growing distance between us. I realized that I needed a better solution. My child has always been "independent" and I don't want to buck the trend, but I don't need to lose them at the mall or on a simple walk either! I found them and they are PERFECT! MY GOD! The fact that they come with a lanyard or wrist strap is huge! She wears it like a watch (like Penny from BOLT!) and I wear it on a cord so I can walk the dog or carry stuff too. I've put her in VOX mode (meaning she just has to speak into it and he sends it to me), I've got push-to-talk (PTT) mode so I can talk to someone without having to activate it. We ended up just turning off VOX on her phone because she really likes to push the button. I also LOCKED the buttons on her radio so she can't fiddle with it or hit the wrong button and accidentally change our frequency. The instructions are pretty crappy, but if you play around a bit you'll get the hang of it. Simple setup steps: 1 - Plug in and leave for at least 6 hours to fully charge (you should always do this with new electronics). 2 - Turn them on - (small power button on top of device between ears - hold for about 3 seconds) 3 - Turn on FM mode (optional) - (press small FM- Button between the "eyes" - (Personally, we turned on the FM mode - the sound quality seems better to me, you can choose the frequency and the corresponding encryption to negate the interference (there is a table, but we just did our same number) see steps below 4 - Press the MENU button (upper right eyelid) - this is the most important button as it allows you to cycle through all the other options (this is also the LOCK button to lock all buttons except PTT if you press and hold them for 3 seconds) * Press the menu ONCE to select the desired channel (1 to 22) (use left eyelid (volume/high) and eyeball (volume /volume down) to change channel)* press twice on the menu to select the desired scrambling channel (from 1 to 38) - Use left eyelid / ball again to select a channel.****NOTE! Both must be set to the SAME channel and ENCRYPTION to work (and also FM if you choose that option). left eyelid/eyeball. and to LOCK keys other than PPT, press and hold Menu (right eyelid) for 3 seconds. The rest of the options are the same. Options: * Press the menu THREE times to select VOX mode (ie child does not need to press the PTT button). I've had mixed results with this - it works when you have something to say, but not so much when you're just saying 1 word. Also, it picks up a lot of false noise, so a lot of blur for no reason. (there are 3 sensitivity settings). Give it a try, but I've since turned it off.* The 4-time menu is a "ringtone" - you can choose from 10 different tones. This only activates when you press the right eye on your device, and then it rings on the other device. this can be good if you really need to get her attention! But it doesn't seem to activate the language. You must continue to press PTT. The rest doesn't matter. That's great, and I also don't see why you can't add more devices when they're all on the same scrambling frequency/channel. and YES - there is a headphone jack!
