I'm starting to believe that the perfect portable CD/MP3 doesn't exist. And if there is one, I just can't find it. The built in CD player in my car broke, so I've been using an iPod for about six months, but I'd like to be able to listen to a real CD every once in a while instead of navigating through 90 million iPod menus. The CD player couldn't be a big flop. If you're literally all about having an MP3 machine of some sort, I guess that's not too bad, but if you have "unreasonable" standards like expecting the player to conform to yours preferred volume level or, as for where you are left out on the CD when you turned off the engine, you should look elsewhere. To be honest, I don't think it's asking much these days that a CD player doesn't start over every time you turn on the engine, but maybe I'm the one mixing up the priorities. I think the remote control is fine. I'm not keen on the idea of a rotating remote, but you can't argue with the convenience of being able to jump from one directory to another (forward or backward) with a single twist of a knob. However, adjusting the volume on the remote may have eased my complaints about preferred volume levels somewhat. I can understand Sony not wanting audio distortion, but (1) it annoys me when companies try to think for me (2) most of us aren't hardcore audiophiles because we buy this dumb player that instantly defeats our expectations should lower and ( 3) We listen to music in the car. Compromises *must* be made. Also, there seems to be a technical issue with the player as it doesn't respond well to Wi-Fi hotspots in my opinion. Here in Houston, when I was driving on one of the busy roads, I was driving through an area that pissed off the player. The only thing I can think of is that the nearby Starbucks has free internet and is insane to play. Passes, pops, distortions and other oddities kept popping up. Thanks to Sony's silly idea of forcing me to restart the player every time I turn it on, I was able to test the CD player in other parts of the city and found that playback was smooth and near-perfect by comparison (aside from my previous dissatisfaction with the volume). If other people have had better results with the player I take my hat off, but I will be returning this player in a hurry and I strongly encourage you to keep looking until you find a decent player. I hate this player so much that I haven't looked into Sony's proprietary ATRAC junk, so I have no opinion on that aspect of the player's functionality.
