First of all I'm a Park Tools fan, I have a lot of their products. I welcome the trend towards biodegradable cleaning and lubricating products. I'll admit that while I keep my chain lubed and generally clean, I haven't thoroughly cleaned the chain on this bike. Removing a rivet with a chain tool, soaking the chain in solvent, then having to reinstall the rivet without jamming... no fun. When I discovered the Park Tools chain scrubber I was happy to buy it and also bought this biodegradable chain cleaner. I did two runs of the chain scrubber and this cleaner following the directions for the scrubber. Although this removed a lot of dirt, there was still dirt and grease on the chain, definitely not ready for new oil. I looked around the garage and spotted a gallon of Simple Green Industrial Strength biodegradable cleaner and degreaser. I used a 1:30 dilution with water, which is about half a teaspoon in a scrubbing brush. The result is a completely clean chain, ready to be lubricated (with biodegradable vegetable oil, of course). This cleaner might work for a relatively clean chain, but it's not very heavy and is quite expensive. However, I appreciate Park Tools' efforts to bring a biodegradable cleaner to market. Let's hope those old solvent baths are a thing of the past.
