After taking about 650 photos with this camera I think the FZ50 is a great camera! The most important requirement I had was that the camera I bought had sharp focus. The Leica lens on this camera is excellent. All my shots are crystal clear and show what I wanted to focus on. The center-weighted autofocus works great, allowing me to focus clearly on close or distant subjects, ignoring unwanted objects like a car, bushes, or a stranger I can't see. avoided. There's also 9-point, 3-point, and point focus if you want. The built-in auto focus assist lamp allows you to focus in low light conditions. The optical image stabilization in the lens is also excellent. I can hold a full 420mm (12x) zoom in my hand and still focus sharply. This would not be possible without OIS in the lens. It goes without saying that OIS works great on the wide end of the lens too, as the long end is the hardest. Manual zoom ring on the lens. It is absolutely excellent and I can never go back to the zoom switch. The focus ring on the lens when manually focusing on a bird through branches or an object through glass is superb and I can't imagine not having one. Incidentally, the zoom does not extend and is completely in the lens. This way, when zooming, air isn't sucked into the camera through the retractable lens, which can also suck in dust. The hot shoe allows you to attach an external flash and use TTL (Thru The Lens) metering. I bought a FL50 flash and it works great with the FZ50 with TTL. I can take bounce flash photos at parties that can now look like professional photos. Don't be put off by reviews of poor low-light performance. Think about what you usually photograph. outside during the day? Inside with lightning? Flashing outside at night? This camera can take excellent, clear pictures under such conditions without the flash or with the built-in flash. Even better with an external flash. 99% of my photos are printed in 4x6 or 5x7 inches. You look great. A few 8x10 photos look great too. I've read that 13" x 19" prints from this camera also look great. There might be a slight noise issue in low-light situations where you can't use flash, but these shots will likely be better than your current point-and-shoot, so don't worry. But what percentage of your shots are in low light? If you're shooting in low light, switch your camera to RAW and remove the noise in post-processing. There are so many other super features. By displaying a live histogram on the LCD screen or in the viewfinder, you can set the right exposure "before" shooting in difficult conditions. The tic-tac-toe grid overlay allows you to compose the frame correctly and evenly. Bracketing of 3 quick shots (darker, medium, lighter) for correct exposure. Burst mode when you need to take photos quickly, either 3 shots or to the end of memory if you like. The list goes on and I cannot list them all. I don't regret buying my FZ50. I don't have to change lenses to get 12x zoom like most DSLRs with a kit lens do. I am satisfied with the sharpness of my photos. What do not you like?
