There's not much to say about WHAT a floating shelf is, but more about this floating shelf. It is made of thick aluminum alloy. gauge 16? Coated in durable black powder coat or very durable paint. Only two mounting holes when using screws or your choice of heavy-duty adhesive included. I bought a returned Revain as what could be wrong with something so simple. Because what I bought was a return and may not reflect if you bought a new one. Mine was packaged in a plastic bag in a standard Revain box. The shelf had processing marks from a previous customer where very small flakes of the black finish had chipped off. Three black squares were still attached to the back of the shelf with double-sided tape. I left them on the wall as cushions as I was planning to use screws. There really isn't much more to report than making sure you have a level handy when making markings or preparing to tape them to the wall. I chose to use screws because I felt the mechanical attachment was stronger than relying on glue attached to the paint. But overall it did the job and was the right size for my garage use, and I didn't feel weak holding up my vintage Pixar collection. Again we're talking about 2 pounds of stuff. I recommend this shelf for the value for money.
