Review on High-Quality Backing for Plastic Dominoes Play by Rich Montgomery

Revainrating 2 out of 5

If the trays were shaped with rounded edges this would be an enthusiastic 5 star rating.

We play Mexican Train Dominoes and I bought these trays to keep the tiles on the table surface, make assembling the train easier and keep the dominoes from falling so other players can't see my hand . These domino trays from Deluxe Games and Puzzles are great for holding large dominoes in place so you can arrange move sequences. There is a groove in the back of the row slots for storing cards, but I haven't used these card slots so I can't comment on their usefulness. My two-star rating relates to the feel of the trays. I don't like these plastic bowls because the edges are very sharp, especially the corners. I think small hands or someone like me, an elderly person with sensitive skin due to diabetes, will find that the edges are very sharp and the trays will hurt my hands. Of course you can't hold it during the game, but the handling bothers me. However, if you don't care about that aspect, these racks will probably fit your needs. Each tray has 4 rows. The shelves hold 15 dice in 3 rows when placed long side down and there is additional space for more dice if you need to choose from a dice stack. Dominoes placed in a row in this way are held securely enough and tilted back slightly so that each tile is easy to see. Vertically stacked dominoes can fall back if the tray is disturbed enough. If you want to place the dominoes vertically, they are not stable and I do not recommend them for this arrangement. Any slight movement will knock you over when you're standing up straight. The trays are made of very hard plastic and I believe they will hold up well over a long period of time. I'm sending them back because I found another set of 4 trays with 5 rows of wood at Revain for a much cheaper price. I mention this because if you think tray size is important, the Deluxe brand plastic 4-row trays are 12" x 5" x 3/4". I'm looking at 8.3" x 4.3". x 3.4" five row trays on. I think the decisive factor for me in returning and buying again is not the difference in size, but the material and the cost. I think if wooden trays have sharp edges I can at least sand them down. If the trays I bought in this review were shaped with rounded edges and corners that would be a raving 5 star rating and I would recommend them to anyone.
