They do what they're supposed to do. They go up when you press the pedal and down when you lift the pedal. That being said, there are a few points of improvement (from my installation experience). #1 Ignore the instructions they give here on the product page and in the box. It says 1 inch from the bottom to set the plate, the box says 1.4 inches (Seriously? Why 1.4 inches? Who the heck uses a decimal for inches?). /2" off the ground, and they leave about 3/8" of space between the ground and the wheel when they're up. #2 An additional tool is needed. A hammer. You can use a hammer, I would recommend a rubber mallet if you have one. If the supplied screw is not deep enough, it can be a bit difficult to insert the reel into the bracket. The back end of the mount made it difficult to install the pin, a hammer fixed it #3 Use an impact wrench. See above why #4 Pay attention to the weight limit. I used them for mobile light medical devices. workbench, it weighs about 85 lbs. If you are building a heavier bench, remember that the total weight, ht, can easily go up to 200 or even 300 depending on your choice of wood and dimensions. The more your bench weighs, the less you can put on it. I think at 500+ pounds I'm pretty ready, but I've seen benches that wouldn't fit any more than a large bird house and still weigh less.
