I have made many homemade water filters for aquariums and fish tanks. Getting a good seal for pipes going in and out of plastic vessels that don't have flat surfaces for a baffle to work on has always been a challenge. I sealed the holes by making gaskets, using silicone, creatively "engineering" custom parts, and using plumber's mortar. These options are not very good. I ordered a pack of 5 inch seals. This might be my best single purchase of the year. I made a filter out of a 30 gallon trash can and used 2 gaskets for the water coming out. There are no instructions for Unisils, but there are videos on the web. Note that you need a 1 3/4 hole saw, which surprised me. The Uniseal simply slides into the hole after you remove the drill bits and loose plastic. The 40 PVS chart runs great through Unisil. I put a small amount of petroleum jelly on only the first inch of the tube, which made it a lot easier to push the seal through. The seals don't leak, even with a 12-inch pipe protruding beyond the seal that returns water to an insulated tank for some sick koi. Even when the pipe was moved, the seals did not leak. These seals are absolutely amazing. They're a lot cheaper (a few dollars versus about $15) than baffles and are more versatile. I would recommend them to anyone who needs to seal pipes going through a curved (or even flat) surface.
