Be sure to use the included Type-C USB 3.0 compatible cable.
For some reason there were two USB-C cables in my package. one was not compatible with USB 3.0. Changed cables and voila. After it was recognized correctly, I set it up via Playstation Settings -> Devices -> USB Drives. Works perfectly. When it arrived I was a little confused by its size and weight, but it actually looks like a mini Playstation that I've grown to love.
