Review on SilverStone Technology Profile Cooling RL KR01 by John Chembola

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Frustratingly loud considering the size

I actually bought a low profile SilverStone Technology processor rated at 95W or more to save me from a budget build that didn't match up the way I wanted it to I had hoped for. For the first time in years I bought a miniITX board. The idea was to put an R5 3400G on it and put it in the Cooler Master Elite 110 RC-110-KKN2 case. Well, the PSU was blocking airflow for the stock Wraith Spire cooler. So if that's an issue, just get a shorter heatsink, right? I'm not new to low profile heatsinks as I've designed 1U and 2U solutions before. And of course these cooling solutions sound like hair dryers or jet engines. Surely a 2+ inch cooler with heat pipes and an 80mm fan would be quiet, right? Em. No. The RL-KR01 appears to be a quality component as I have not had any defects in materials or workmanship. The cooler attaches to the AM4 mount in the ears, which is a little less awkward than the effort it takes to bend the board to use the 4-hole mount. The cooler comes with a disposable thermal paste dispenser (hooray! no TIM gasket). The 2.1" cooler isn't really that much shorter than the OEM cooler, but there is plenty of space between it and the PSU, which I felt comfortable with. However, there was a problem loading it. He wasn't LOUD, but he was "loud". It got even louder under load. Given that the pc had to take a backseat, I realized I had made a mistake. Not sure if I could get a lower profile cooler so I decided to go back to the OEM cooler and just use the SFX power supply. I'm not saying the SilverStone Technology RL-KR01 is bad. I have no reason to believe the 95W TDP is wrong either, but I think you're going to have a REALLY noisy fan with this cooler. Anyway, the office sounds like an airfield, maybe that suits you. However, this is not entirely suitable for silent builds. I used the R5 3400G at light load. Imagine how it will sound. I would like with a 95 W processor :o
