Review of Sangean RCR-9

So my REALLY good Boston Acoustics solo fell apart and I needed a new clock radio. I checked and apart from the Sony range there wasn't much to choose from unless you wanted a model with an iPod dock. I looked at the entire Sangean line and it was at the top of my price range. The bottom line is that it's a solid choice so far. Here's why I like it: First, I like the clean look and the fact that there are no buttons on the front. Just a beautiful super easy to read analog clock face. The buttons on the top go well with the design, and the display is just gorgeous. I don't have to read the settings while lying down, I like to sit on the edge of the bed. The radio sounds very good for such a small clock radio. It includes a LOUDNESS setting that probably helps. Sounds MUCH better than the Sony clock radio which kind of reminds me of the Holiday Inn sound. The display backlight has 7 settings from very dark to very bright. I leave mine at 2.- The auto time setting worked for me for 20 minutes. (I live in the Denver area). You just have to make sure that you enter the correct time zone. HWS (Human Wake System) works with radio alarm clock. Nice but gaining momentum very quickly. While it's a nice feature, I'm not sure it's THAT useful. The snooze time can be set to 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes. I set it to 10 minutes. Even though all the buttons on the top are flat, I have no problem activating the snooze button. It's fairly broad and easy to spot when I'm half asleep. The only thing some people might not like is that there is only one button to select a preset station, even though you can set up to 9 presets. each for AM/FM (according to the manual). I'm only interested in 2 or 3 stations these days, so I don't mind hitting the same button multiple times to select the station I want. Better than a bunch of preset station buttons that I'll never use. - The alarm setting of the radio station is independent of the last selected station and volume. This means that when setting the clock radio you select the radio frequency or preset you want and the volume setting number (the volume has a notch and the volume number is shown on the top LCD). You can fall asleep listening to one station at a low volume and wake up to another station at a higher volume. You can also set an alarm for once, daily, weekdays or weekends. As for the manual, almost everyone seems to think that the Sangean manuals aren't the best, but I really didn't have much trouble understanding it. I just had to read it patiently a few times. If you've already tried to understand the Sony clock radio user guide, you shouldn't have any trouble. One downside is that I wish the backup system was better, namely the battery. But then you should always remember to change the battery. While I like the internal power capacitor backup theory, I just have to see how good it is. It must survive a brief power outage. Worst case, you can buy a cheap UPS from Best Buy for about $20. Well it's all a compromise and it came close to what I wanted. I think the RCR-9 is being discontinued because I didn't see it on the Sangean website. You can still look at the manual. So if you want one, I won't wait too long. I also have black, and the picture on the box is white. So it seems that at least once a white model was also available, but when I scoured the web all I found was a black model. Happy shopping Revane!
