Review on GRADO Prestige Gold3 Phono Cartridge with Stylus - Standard Mount by Tim Springer

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Please don't waste your money on this

In any case, I'm not an avid audiophile. I was looking for something to replace my orthophone 2m red. A little browsing and this car caught my attention. It had all the bells and whistles of a more expensive cartridge and a purported sound comparable to $3,000 cartridges. As soon as I put the cartridge on my arm, there was an awful buzz. I will say that the hum is imperceptible during gameplay. But the sound is oh my god it's awful. The instruments on the records that I had enjoyed for years suddenly disappeared. The vocals literally move to a completely different place in the mix. It's like the mix is all messed up and the voice is singing in a plastic bottle. Everyone who loves this pickup says its unique color scheme makes it perfect for jazz records. One record I tried had a jazz acoustic guitar part. On Grado, this track was the center of the mix and sounded almost remote. On the orthophone it panned correctly and beautifully, with no loss of heat. I thought there would be improvements to the issues people were reporting with the Grado 2 series, but it seems those issues have gotten worse with the 3 series. If you're interested in buying this, I strongly encourage you to consider it. I'm listening to a Technics 1600 with the correct tube preamp and monitor settings. I don't know how a $300 cassette can ruin a perfectly mixed record. Don't pay for that crap.
