KNIT KIMONO ALSO, like the author's previous book Knitting a Kimono: 18 Designs with Simple Shapes, presents a diverse collection of beautiful knitting patterns. Kimono. The patterns are carefully crafted: asymmetrical necklines are flat (re-su yugata), traditional front openings hang straight (tsui-do hanten), and trendy jagged edges form controlled V-necklines (nishiki) or slightly irregular curves (keshi murasaki). There is a brief and interesting historical discussion of the Japanese tradition of wearing five (or up to twenty) multicolored robes according to "approved" color sets. Continuing this layered tradition, the book includes patterns for several simple strapless bodices (with minimalist edging or decorative panels) to be paired with and worn underneath kimonos. an i-cord button-down band, a shaped band with multicolored panels at the front, a traditional Japanese square sleeve, an asymmetric wrap neckline, a short row band, and appliquéd embellishments with embroidery or crochet chains. On the accompanying DVD, author Vicki Square demonstrates exactly how to perform each of the unusual techniques required in the patterns, and also explains how other techniques such as multicolored chain stitch painting (mosaic knitting) are performed. The DVD is produced in the high professional quality, you've come to expect from Interweave Press. To see some of the designs, take a moment to view the Look Inside This Book feature at the top of the page. The photos clearly show how well tailored these kimonos are, as none of the models pose in unnatural or slouched poses to hide imperfections. If you have time to visit the publisher's website, you can also check out the YouTube video of Vicki Square showing her moves by Shay Pendray, which can be found on the book's description page.
