The magnets are countersunk. WTF
Not only are the magnets on this pen holder stupidly weak, they are recessed into their plastic housings and won't touch any surface that you try to attach them to with a magnet. Try attaching this pen holder to a dry erase board and it will just fall to the floor. There is no evidence of a magnetic response. It's such a cheap piece of junk that it's not even worth the money, time, or environmental cost of sending it in for a refund. Better stick a stronger magnet on the paper cup.
