For the classical music I listen to, MP3 and WMA files, even when ripped at 256 bps or higher, just don't retain the same high fidelity as the original CD, so I've always had a portable CD player to listen to the music I love most. My old Sony drive recently fell out of my car (don't ask why. I got a speeding ticket along with the loss). I went to my local Sony Style retail store but they ran out of drives so I ordered the D-NF340 - the "top of the range" model - here at Revain, even though Revain was priced at a few bucks. above the manufacturer's suggested retail price. Even with the included cheap headphones, the NF340 delivers excellent sound quality. With Panasonic's best pair, the sound was rich, bright, aromatic and. just right, in contrast to the dull and mechanical sound quality of MP3s, even at high bitrates or optimized VBRs. There is no comparison. (Of course, I have a classical ear, so I can be a little more sensitive to the sound quality of music than most people, and my ears aren't deaf from years of listening to rock 'n' roll, like some of my friends.) By Von Beethoven to a quiet violin concerto to flirtatious Mozart serenades and the few jazz and rock CDs in my collection all sound so much better. It just hurts to go back to MP3. Like all Sony drives, the D-NF340 remembers the exact point in the track where you stopped the music. This also applies if you remove the CD and reinsert it. (Of course, if you play another CD and then return to the first CD, playback will start over from the beginning.) To force play from the beginning after stopping, simply press and hold the play/pause button for a few seconds. The .D-NF340 also plays MP3 discs and also supports FM radio reception. The lack of AM suits me because, firstly, I never listen to AM radio, and secondly, almost all AM stations in my area operate in languages other than English, so even if there is an earthquake or other signs of 2012 years stand out my area, i might not understand what you are saying in the morning. The headphone cable acts as an FM antenna, as is often the case with these portable players. The scope of delivery includes a simple remote control without a display. The CD player itself looks well made and while not as ultra thin as my last Sony (which used special NiCd batteries) it is appealing in style. It uses 2 AA batteries. (Unfortunately, the battery compartment is inside the CD, so be sure to close the door tightly to avoid scratching the discs.) I use Sanyo Eneloop NiMH rechargeable discs, which like regular NiMH discs, don't hold a charge even when not in use to lose. happy with my D-NF340.
