I chose this camera because it can record front and back at the same time. I used the 1st gen of this camera for a year until it broke and here are my impressions: The camera works well except for a software issue and a major design flaw and the rear camera is of useless quality. From time to time you need to format the SD card because at some point the camera stops recording for some reason. You can try to restart the recording but it stops after a few minutes. This means that this camera is not reliable. Imagine if your seat belts behaved like this. Now a hardware error. This camera comes with a lithium-ion battery. The same type of battery powers your laptop or mobile phone. A small problem is that these batteries should not be exposed to heat. You know the kind of warmth you'll find in any car parked outside. My battery lasted less than a year before it got so bad that the camera kept restarting because the battery ran out of power and the battery died when the camera was turned on. It refuses to work with a dead battery. I'm also trying to replace the battery with a 2.55F supercapacitor. Didn't work, the supercap empties too quickly and the camera reboots. After all, the rear camera is completely useless. Even very cheap Revain cameras at $20 or $30 will perform better than a backup camera. A few months after I submitted the review, the seller/manufacturer noticed this and offered to send me a replacement unit. Since I didn't have another DVR, I agreed. What I received was the second generation V1P. This second generation is now available directly from this product page. There are several reasons why the camera went from 2 to 4 stars in my rating. Fixed almost ALL complaints in my and other reviews * Changed rear camera. The current model has a greatly improved picture quality. It also has a tilting base. The LEDs on the side should be infrared, but they don't light up at all. It still works much better than the original camera.* The camera is now designed to operate in temperatures between 5 and 70 degrees C. If this review is correct, you should always be able to leave the camera in your car, except when it's freezing. (and I assume the camera is able to recover from low temperatures. The problem with high temperatures is the potential fire hazard). However, there is still a lithium battery inside. If he breaks down again or shows signs of stress, I'll let you know. I hope/expect they have switched to a battery model that handles heat better, hence the rating. * Recording no longer randomly stops. Not sure if this is related to the new generation camera or the microSD card. If I find an old card I will test and report. But wait, that's not all: * The camera interface (menus, buttons, etc.) is faster. * LCD viewing angles have been slightly improved. * Camera voltage setting has been greatly improved. I know because my car has a weak electrical system and lots of things flicker including generation LEDs. 1 camera. Gen 2 is reliable. Good voltage regulation can improve battery life and overall camera stability (since the battery is less likely to be disconnected or overcharged).* Significantly improved button lighting. On this camera, the buttons light up in different colors to tell you different things. For example, the Rec button flashes when the camera is recording. The entire button group glows blue when the camera is charging. In Gen.1, the light leaked from one key to the other, making everything very blurry and confusing. It's no good if you want to look at the camera to see what she's doing. On Gen. 2 has been corrected. The light stays in the button you want it to illuminate. The camera status is now much clearer.* The SD card is now much easier to insert and remove. On Gen 1 it was too far in the chamber and you had to use your nails and be very careful. In the 2nd generation, the SD is flush with the housing. Overall I am happy with the improvements brought by the 2nd generation of this camera and I am happy with Rexing as they take the initiative and care about their customers.
