Magnifying glasses are about 8 cm in diameter. The lens I bought has a focal length of 80mm. I've used one of these to enlarge small items like restaurant menus. They are made of plastic and scratch easily, so a case is needed to protect the finish. The relatively large diameter of the lens ensures that the sun's rays "quickly ignite" small chips for a campfire.
