I have just recently purchased a Cobra GPS1000DLX and am very disappointed. ) Disadvantages: Software (both on the device and in the bundle) Hardware - serial interface (RS232) All I can say about the software on the device is that it works. In addition, it takes some getting used to and is not very user-friendly. As for the included Rand McNally Street Finder software, it is clear that this software was written around 1999 and has not been updated. Cobra/Rand are really trying to make a dime out of this while they can. I've found that trying to install software on an XP machine can pose a problem. *Warning* Windows XP SP2 sometimes deletes a file required to install this software. Let me save you some time, this is not listed as a known issue on the website. You must call Rand McNally for a solution. (That's all Cobra will tell you) *Suggestion - bring coffee and donuts with you before attempting to install. After inserting the CD and running the installer, it takes an average of 5 minutes for the pre-installer to finish and the actual installer to start. works just like it looks. After I created a map and tried to download it, the GPS told me it needed a "data" CD. (*Note: This is more in line with what should have been part of the initial installation). Let's just say it also took me a while to figure out that this was needed on the first CD drive on my system, not the drive I was using. install it. Once the disk was in the correct drive, it began copying the files it needed (enough time for another coffee break). As the transfer between the software and the GPS module began, I noticed that the progress bar was barely moving (another coffee break), so I took this time to reflect on the advantages of USB over serial and why serial is OBSOLETE for consumer products . After completing this task, I created a route between the two points. The software tracked my route completely inaccurately (let's say my starting point was about 15+ meters off the actual route, not just one point but the entire route). This is a good pad for a teenager or young backpacker, or as a gift. Also, I recommend buying one of the other GPS devices.
