Sturdy wood allows you to place items above and below. Side by side is good too. I don't recommend layering one over the other. Is it glued or attached with velcro. I really liked the storage space. That's why I ordered this item, but the slit in the photo was very deceptive. That disappointed me. It can be removed and used for thick cords/cables. It can be used for phone charger if thin enough. He can definitely hold pens. However, it is not intended for a ten-inch tablet in landscape mode. That does not fit. I put my tablet and iPhone upright and they kept falling down. My iPhone worked horizontally. The only reason I keep it is so I can use it for my laptop and as a small under tray organizer. Otherwise I would have sent it back.
