Quality leather, decent transparent double sided tape. I placed mine on a 2 inch thick block of recycled cherry wood large enough to use the lid of the box the leather came in to protect the surface of the leather when I store the block. The block is large enough that I can comfortably hold it with my left hand while cutting with my right. I've been sharpening my chisels and planes on Norton waterstones for years, which makes them - yes - very sharp. sharp as a hand. It was important. I should add that I've never come across a "dumb" tool without such "terrible" sharpness; but that's a good brag and I have to admit it's fun to take another 60 seconds to get the ultimate level of sharpness.
