Being able to knit first

This is a fascinating machine that needs to be learned like any other craft. If you know the basics of knitting in advance, e.g. Finding out things like how stitches are formed, what holds them in place, yarn count and weight will save you a lot of headaches. The hard plastic makes it look like a toy but I don't recommend it for kids (unless they can knit too and can't be gentle), the pieces can bend, break or warp - I suspect some of the bad reviews have been caused by damage in transit - hey, that happens, and while I got a good one so I didn't have to deal with the seller, Amazon is generally pretty good with returns and exchanges. Patience is the name of the game on this machine - it's not a $1,500 "set and forget" machine - you need to watch each stitch as it's being wagered, and it's important to be vigilant, especially in the first few rounds be. Tubular knitting is easier than flat knitting because you don't have to worry about edges. I chose "40" stitches because I wanted to "turn out" the sleeves (haha, pun) since I have a bad habit of turning down sweaters and I don't have one-armed friends. It's a bit small for adult hats, but perfect for knitting sleeves and much faster than hand knitting. I've also found that with a little "untangling" I can undo the ugly first few rows and now I have living stitches to handknit with another stitch for the cuff. For me it was a win. I hope it can be for you too!

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • No productivity
