It hardly got hot as there was always coal inside. After an hour the charcoal is still hot. Tried all kinds of resins. Excellent insulating properties judging by the observations. There is a bar in the middle that separates the charcoal holder from the bottom drawer. This prevented slight overheating. The center plank itself was about 10 degrees warmer than the surrounding air. Wood is an excellent heat insulator. A closed box is probably several degrees warmer than a room with burning coals. The paint has held and does not cause any problems. I suggest not using a burner to avoid damaging the box as it is clearly not designed to be burned directly with an open flame. After all, it's wood that burns at 650 degrees Fahrenheit. I put some sand in just to cover the screw on the bottom of the coal holder so it wouldn't be exposed to the harsh conditions of the ash. It appears that the screw attaches the metal to the wooden panel below. I don't see any traces of glue on the mount, which is logical as it heats up. At a small hot angle (33mm), the metal holder itself doesn't get very hot. In this way, the heat is well ventilated and dissipated. I would advise against allowing ash to build up in the holder as ventilation is paramount to keeping the charcoal burning. Excessive use of the flashlight will not light it, only damage the box. If you do, it is user error and not a design or manufacturing issue. Well made box, much larger than I expected. Not huge, but sufficient. There should probably be a higher price tag, but we know how well the industry works these days that quality products can be available at lower prices than ever before and still somehow make good profits. A note: the side panels look glued on. So metal isn't really going to improve heat transfer, but as I said, I don't even consider heat an issue to begin with. If I don't light the box, I'm sure I'll be fine. I'm not an idiot. We know there are many. Obviously, I'm a scientist with experience in multiple areas of technology, including design and manufacturing. I am a licensed professional and very happy with this purchase.
