I went with the second choice and connected to the 5GHz network using an external modem. There is no contention (because the built-in modem is apparently just plugged in and not connected to any router). The communication is excellent, with only one antenna needed to diminish the signal strength behind the two concrete walls. I discovered that Tenda had also gone to "sleep" after closing the lid of the laptop and opening it again an hour later. In order for the laptop to recognize Tenda once more, it was necessary to "re-plug" her, which was an inconvenience that I did not appreciate. BUT! After rummaging around in the settings of the gadget, I discovered that all that is required of you is to check the option that says "Do not turn off the power of the device."
