Works great overall, a bit finicky at times

I use this for work to capture computer screens on a command line basis and it works very well, especially for the price. It also works well with Linux (using Ubuntu 18.04 on the laptop it is connected to, no additional software is required to register Ubuntu as a camera device). My only complaints are: 1. There are occasional transmission glitches (usually after my laptop and other systems have been powered off or idle for a while) requiring the device to be fully disconnected (USB and HDMI in and out) and reconnected2 . It also sometimes crashes when the device is available (again usually after my laptop is off or idle) so I don't see it as a camera device on my laptop. a quick USB disconnect/reconnect seems to fix this issue, 3. Text and other high-contrast displays appear a bit blurry; This is likely due to the capture device being optimized for motion, so static elements look a bit odd. I suspect this isn't fixable, except on more expensive units (and part of the purpose of buying this unit was that it was cheap). The screenshot shows #3; All text elements should be "white" (you know, that dull off-white color of the console terminal), but somehow all block characters are rendered with a blue tint and the text has an iridescent overlay around it. Still a great read and it works great for my purposes so I won't dock it for that. The interference is problematic, but I'm sure my environment doesn't help much either (using the KVM output as an input is probably not a good idea, and the device is already being plugged and unplugged frequently when I use my laptop from the Workstation picks up and inputs devices and my laptop keeps going in and out of sleep mode), so I'm only giving one star for that. TL;DR: Not perfect, but if you don't need perfection and aren't willing to shell out $$$ for it, this capture key is probably your best bet.

Pros
  • Stronger compatibility
Cons
  • Can't remember but there was something
