Like everything new. We watched YouTube videos to get an idea of the tech and it helped. I would suggest sorting the corn husks (by size) before applying the masa and letting them dry a bit by placing them in a bowl to drain a bit. We have cooked tamales in the past and have always considered it a once in a lifetime experience. But after using spreaders we seriously considered making tamales more often as it really made things easier and less awkward.
