Review on πŸ“· Capture the World in Stunning Detail: Olympus SP-570UZ 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Optical Dual Image Stabilized Zoom by Tony Fuchs

Excellent camera - few flaws

from Olympus C-750UZ (4 MP, 10x zoom) to SP-570UZ. I wanted a longer zoom, higher MP, a zoom ring (selectable as a manual focus ring) and permanent full manual control. I immediately installed a firmware update from the Olympus website to smooth out the zoom ring. I use a 2GB M+ xD card, which stores large photo files fairly quickly. With more experience, many knobs/switches/control rings seem logical enough. I was surprised at the difference in the widest zoom settings - the SP-570 takes up much more width for landscapes. It also has an awesome panorama stitching option which I have used when photographing landscapes. I'm also impressed by the image stabilization, which allowed for surprisingly sharp full moon photos at 20x zoom handheld. I bought a CLA-10 extension tube to use the 55mm polarizing filter I used on the C-750. This resulted in severe vignetting when shooting at the highest possible zoom. Since most of my photos are taken with at least some manual control, I haven't tried all of the scene settings yet. There are many to choose from. I was expecting battery life to be longer before recharging, so I'm hoping some newer, more powerful rechargeable batteries will provide a way out. I haven't yet found a way to change the intensity of the brightness of the electronic viewfinder, which consistently renders objects much brighter than the resulting photos. I've learned to compensate for this, but a brightness adjustment would be better. Overall, this camera offers a lot of flexibility and user control over a variety of photography opportunities. I would definitely recommend it if you want something more than auto aim and shoot but don't want to carry all the lenses you need on a DSLR.
