My kids and I are learning how to use them. I have three different ones - partly for comparison, partly because we just needed more than one so we could all create something together. This one turned out to be EXACTLY the same as the other one which is 10% larger. The only difference, literally, is that the temperature dial is orange on this one and yellow on the other. The case is also painted in a different color. It has almost everything you need. You can start from the moment it arrives if you'd like - it comes with wood, LOTS of nibs, carbon paper, crayons, etc. There are even stencils - don't use them with a burning pen - you'll melt them. Draw on the template with a pencil. There is no indicator on the handle to show it's hot. But you can smell hot when it's done. It burns fairly evenly. It takes a lot of practice and I'm still in the learning process. It goes like butter on wood if you go in the same direction as the grain. It's a bit harder going upstream, and I think of lines and big dots as I go, so I've found that going very slowly helps. The photos on the list give the impression that you can do amazing things with it, but be aware. Some of these photos are laser cut! Even with all the patience in the world, you won't be able to carve such intricate designs out of wood. It can write, draw and maybe even cut with the right settings/applications/material. But you can't get those laser cuts! Gloves are good for protection against accidental touches, but they are not very heat resistant. The grip of the handle gets VERY hot. I can handle it for small projects, but even when I'm jotting down something as small as a bookmark, I have to take breaks. So I need to invest in better gloves that really keep you warm. All in all, this is a fun educational toy. My kids (9 and 11 years old) enjoy it with me and my almost 7 year old son even joins in occasionally (in the attached photo he is making a decoration for his grandparents). My almost 7 year old toddler is a bit difficult to hold so needs lots of help. But my 9 and 11 year olds can safely play with it without my help (after the first few sessions with me and learning how to use it safely).
