Review on πŸ”Œ Sabrent 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub with LED Power Switches & 5V/2.5A Adapter - HB-UMP3 by Gonzalo Marshall

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Missing product feature information will result in unnecessary returns.

On Friday I returned this product as defective, to no avail, because when I plugged it into the power supply, the individual port lights for ports 2, 3 and 4 only lit up when the corresponding button was pressed. I mistakenly assumed the unit was defective and asked for a replacement which was prudently sent to me for the night. Imagine my dismay when the exact same thing happened to the replacement. I didn't even bother to plug the first device into the USB port because the light from port 1 was off. This time I was curious to see if port 1 is recognized at all when the device is connected to the USB port and the USB stick is installed. I plugged the device into the USB port, pressed the port 1 button, and the LED turned on. Apparently the LED of port 1 does not light up when only connected to the power supply and unlike ports 2,3 and 4 only lights up when a device is connected to an active USB port of a powered on computer. It would be nice if this information was included in a little explanation. It would save both me and the Revain representative a lot of time and nerves. I spoke to... In the absence of information to the contrary, one would expect all 4 ports to always behave the same. Manufacturers make life unnecessarily difficult for themselves, their dealers and end users by omitting useful information on their packaging. Further experiments showed that port 1 does not receive power from the power supply, only from the USB port it is connected to. One of the reasons I bought a powered USB hub was that I could charge USB devices without turning on the computer. Examples include my Bluetooth headset for Dragon and an audio recorder with a flash drive. It's nice to be able to charge these devices without the computer running, just don't try it through port 1, it won't work.
