For those looking for a more affordable alternative to the Thunderbolt docking station, consider this Highpoint product called the Rocketstor 5411D. It connects to Macs and PCs with the included USB 3.0 cable. Like the Thunderolt dock, it offers port expansion via a single USB 3 connector and offers Gigabit Ethernet, audio in and out, a three-port USB 3.0 hub, an SD card reader, and a hard drive dock on the top. It doesn't support video output like Thunderbolt dock. Performance is slightly better than some Thunderbolt docks, although ethernet performance on Windows was about 220 megabits per second slower than on my Mac. Mac reached about 860 megabits per second and Windows about 640 megabits per second. Overall, it's a great Thunderbolt alternative that also works on most components and costs less. Windows users definitely have something to consider. DISCLOSURE: Highpoint provided me with a sample for this review.
