Finding the right size was a wild guesswork game - online there was no choice of cup size, XXS came with a small cup - in the shop at the rink they had XXS with a bear, XS, small mugs - unfortunately sold out before my child tried them on. Really measure the child's waist - as the belt is a thick, tight elastic band and is a good indicator of fit. My son is 4.5 years old and wears 4T-5T pants but we often struggle with wide waist as he is skinny. He is 3ft 2in and 39# and XXS is perfect. His shorts are baggy but the waist is tight but that's exactly what we need as we need to tape clean his waist to keep his gear. A small cup is big, but he was okay with that. He'll probably outgrow them within a year - he could probably ditch the XS. The price on the Internet was = our professional shop - so no savings.
