Keeps your phone away from prying eyes and also within easy reach when your hand rests on the armrest. Who cares if you can't see the shift pattern anymore? This is a Prius. Seriously, what are you translating? A thin metal disk sticks to your phone or case. Or in my case (pun intended) I put the disc on my phone under the case so I couldn't see it.
