The hub has a USB-C connector so you don't lose your original USB-C connector. So I have an Ethernet 1000 port like most laptops don't come with one. The other USB slots I use are for a mouse, keyboard and thumb drives. I couldn't use the HDMI and VGA ports at the same time do not know how. You can connect VGA, but if you connect HDMI, VGA will turn off. I have HDMI on my laptop so I can still set up 3 VGA HDMI screens and my laptop screen. If your laptop charges via USB, you can use the PD port, which charges your laptop while the hub is connected.
