You can make it work, but it takes some work

So, full disclosure, getting my cat to use that door wasn't easy, and most of it was the magnetic collar. I was able to tell why the lock wasn't working when my cat approached and it had to do with where this thing sat on my cat when it was on the collar. Basically, I had to do a few do-it-yourself steps and a few steps to prepare my cat for long-term use. I followed the height guidelines when installing the door, but in order for my cat to learn how to use the door, I had to remove the magnetic collar from his chest to allow the release mechanism to work without much effort on his part. Otherwise he would have gone to him and nothing would have happened and he would have gently pressed his head against the door to force it open and it would have stayed locked. another around his neck) and taped a large piece of plastic from an old bicycle headlight under a magnet to lift the whole thing over his neck and close to his chin. After about a week I removed the second collar so the piece doesn't sit as high anymore but is still pulled up due to the extra plastic lining. After about a week I removed the plastic and he almost immediately started using the door for its intended purpose. Sometimes he still has to work a little to open the door, but he will get the job done because he knows it will work (whereas in the beginning he always just walked towards the locked door that wouldn't open, so gave without trying very hard - if, if he tried, it would eventually work). another solution for our situation: two cats that cannot eat each other for health reasons. There was no control in front of this door, although installing it and training the cat was not a painless process. We are very satisfied with this in the long term.
