I just had a small hole with a few short transverse cracks coming out of it. It stayed that way for a year or more, but I decided it was better to be safe than sorry. I followed instructions that I thought were clear. Moving on to the pressurizing step, I had some leaks around the gasket. I thought I pushed hard on the drive, but apparently I didn't do it well enough. Part of the problem might be that my hole was small so I didn't have to use as much material. Make sure you save some for the last step. In any case, using a razor to remove excess putty from the windshield was no problem so no damage was done. My main concern was that it doesn't spread anymore, so I'm satisfied.
