Review on J Tech Digital Premium Quality Splitter by Harald Patterson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

More features than listed: Supports 192kHz

Despite claiming to only support <= 96kHz sampling rates (officially TOSLINK's highest sampling rate), I have successfully powered my DAC at all of the PCM sample rates available to me: 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz and 48/96/192kHz using available 6ft TOSLINK cables from PI Manufacturing and Kabeldirekt . I can see the sample rate on both ends, and even 192kHz works well. One caveat: if you wiggle any of the four enabled TOSLINK ports, the signal will be interrupted. Play around with it if you have connection problems. While the remote has a rather narrow angle to work with, the receiver is more forgiving. Pair it with the best remote, like the Logitech Harmony 665 Universal Remote, and the Switch becomes a whole lot easier to use. You can then also define sequences to switch the input to both outputs at the touch of a button. I don't like that the interface on the device is laid out in reverse order, showing inputs 4 through 1 for output B, then A, then selecting the B and A buttons, rather than inputs 1 through 4 for output A, then B, then select the A and B buttons. This makes it a little harder to tell which input is selected when I'm watching TV on the couch at night. The connections on the back are arranged in the same order, which makes sense when you look at the device from the front, because then you see inputs 1 to 4, outputs 1 and 2. And of course this is not the prettiest device. However, worth the asking price!

Pros
  • Surge protection can prevent damage caused by connecting an incompatible power supply to the device
Cons
  • Expensive
